If you have been around a toddler, this rhyme is an earworm. The Wheels Of The Bus is one of the most popular rhymes among children nowadays, and is enjoyed in various versions. It is an American folk song which was originally written and composed by Verna Hills.

The original song was called “The Bus” and each verse ended with the words “all day long” instead of the modern-day lyrics that go “all through the town”. It is sung on the classic tune of Merry Go Round The Mulburry Bush. The rhyme has a rhythmic pattern, on the theme of various features of a bus that children can notice.

Wheels Of The Bus is a popular song among kids of various age groups. While reciting this rhyme, kids will learn to make observations about things like the wheels turning, opening and shutting of the doors, the movement of the wipers, and so on. They will also learn the names of all these elements of a vehicle like motor, wipers and signals and relate to them through actions. The Wheels Of The Bus rhyme has a rhythmic pattern, with each verse starting with the line “The ___ of the bus goes…” with a different feature of the bus introduced in each verse. The next line uses the repetition device to describe the movement or the sound of that feature. And the fourth line of every verse is the same in every paragraph, “all through the town”. Apart from repetition, you can notice the rhyming pattern in The Wheels Of The Bus as “AAAB” With the first and third line repeated in the verse and the last line repeated in every verse throughout the rhyme.

  • Get a long chart paper and draw a simple outline of a bus.
  • Mark some windows on the bus, and cut them out.
  • Now, mark the door, wheels and signals.
  • Gather your child along with their siblings, cousins or friends and ask them to colour the entire bus using crayons or paints.
  • Paste some cardboard backing on the reverse side of the bus.
  • Use coloured tape to mark the window frames of the bus.
  • Now, let all the children get behind the bus and peek out of each window.
