Materials:
- Coloured paper (red, green, dark green, yellow, black, brown)
- Plain paper (if you don’t have coloured paper)
- Paints
- Scissors
- Glue/stapler
Instructions:
- Let’s start by making the body of the snake. You can make either a light green and dark green snake, a green and yellow, a green and black, a yellow and black, or a yellow and brown snake.
- Take your coloured papers of choice. Cut out strips from them that are about 3 to 3.5 inches long, and 1.5 inches wide.
- If using plain paper, cut out the strips as above, and then let your child paint half the number of strips in one colour, and half in the other colour.
- Let’s say you’re making a green and yellow snake. Now, fold a green strip to make a loop, and either glue or staple the ends to hold the circular shape. Then, take a yellow strip, and make it loop around the green loop, and glue/staple its ends together (see image for reference).
- Continue this way with alternating colours to make a chain of loops. The body of the snake is now ready.
- Next, let’s make the snake’s head. Draw a large triangle on a piece of green-coloured paper, and make its edges rounded, not sharp. Cut it out carefully, and help your child to glue it to one end of the chain-link body.
- Similarly, make a small rounded triangle, and glue it to the opposite end of the chain-link body to make the tail.
- Now, it’s time for some quick finger painting! Get out some black and white paints. Have your child dip a finger in the white paint first, and press it onto the snake’s head to make two eyes. Let the paint dry.
- Then, have him dip another finger in the black paint, and make two smaller impressions inside the white parts to complete the look!
- Lastly, let’s make a red tongue. Use the red coloured paper to draw a tongue with an inverted V-shape at one end of it (you know what a snake’s forked tongue looks like!). Cut it out carefully, and let your child stick it on the underside of the snake’s head.

The paper snake is ready!
