Monsoon time is a fun time for kids! If you’re thinking its impossible to make the constant heavy showers, cloudy skies, puddly roads and subsequent traffic jams enjoyable for kids, imagine what fun it is for kids to watch the rains from the windows, observe the brightly coloured fresh grass, flowers and trees, to feel the cool breeze and enjoy a lot of splish, splash and sploosh in the puddles! And not to forget, the beautiful, magical rainbows in the sky!

But while you are trying to keep your child safe and protected from the weather, here’s a fun idea to keep them entertained while they’re locked indoors, missing their playgrounds and outings. How about we teach them some fun rhymes and songs about rain to get them excited about this new weather they’re experiencing. It will also teach them about many aspects of monsoons, encouraging them to pay attention to raindrops, thunder, lightning, and the need to be careful while stepping out in the rain.

I Hear Thunder

I hear thunder!

Oh! don’t you? Oh! don’t you?
Pitter, patter raindrops,
Pitter, patter raindrops,
I’m wet through!
I’m wet through!

It’s Raining, It’s Pouring

It’s raining, it’s pouring.
The old man is snoring.
He bumped his head and went to bed
And he couldn’t get up in the morning.

Itsy Bitsy Spider

The itsy bitsy spider
went up the water spout.

Down came the rain,
and washed the spider out.

Up came the sun,
and dried up all the rain,

and the itsy bitsy spider
went up the spout again.

Rain On The Green Grass

Rain on the green grass,
Rain on the tree,
Rain on the housetop,
But not on me.

Listen to the rain!
Pitter patter, pitter patter,
On the window pane.
Dropping, dropping, dropping, dropping,
Dropping on the ground.
Dripping, dripping, dripping, dripping,
Listen to the sound!

Did You Know These Benefits Of Rhymes For Toddlers?

  1. As you teach your toddler these fun rhymes, try to demonstrate all the actions that go along with them. Your child will imitate and learn these actions as they work on their motor skills. What’s more, they will love putting up a special recitation performance for you every now and then.
  2. Some theatrical gestures and dramatic expressions go a long way in keeping your child entertained and getting them excited about the rhymes. They will also find the concepts more relatable when they see your expressions and learn the meanings of the words in context. Moreover, they will love it when their mom and dad get down on the play mat with them for this fun time.
  3. Repeated exposure to these rhymes will help your toddler memorise them with time, improving their cognitive skills. Depending on your little one’s speech development, they may only remember a few words from the rhymes to start with, but this is the stepping stone to long-term language and verbal skill development.
  4. You may not even realise the many benefits of learning rhymes, as it leads to natural observation and organic learning. Did you know that rhymes can even work on your toddler’s math skills? Not just numerical vocabulary, absolutely all rhymes are full of patterns, sequences, and numbered beats.

So enjoy rhyme time with your toddler every now and then. Play these rhymes on the music system for them, sing along with them, check how much they remember and watch them recite or let them read rhyme books with pictures to get their creativity growing! Enjoy the rains and rhymes!
