#BackToSchool: Safety Tips For Kids

Going back to school can excite children as they look forward to entering the next grade, seeing their friends and meeting new people. But for parents, back-to-school can mean back to worrying in some cases! As a parent, sending your child to school almost after two years of learning from home can be an anxious time. Well parents, give yourself some peace of mind by following the simple safety tips to make sure your kids stay safe on the way to school, in the classroom, and even on the playground!

1. Mask Up 

  • Make sure to explain to your child not to remove masks in public places like buses, buildings, classrooms, etc. 
  • Give your child a clean mask every day and keep a backup mask in their bag. 
  • You can label your child’s mask so that it’s not mixed with another child’s during lunch. 
  • Practice putting on and taking off the mask with your kid. 
  • Make your child understand not to share or exchange their face mask with other kids.

2. Hand Wash 

  • Practice washing hands at home with your child and explain why it’s important to wash hands with soap and water for minimum 20 seconds.  
  • Make your child understand that when hand-washing isn’t available, they can use a hand sanitizer. 
  • Teach your kid to cover their mouth and nose with their elbow or tissue when they cough or sneeze, and then wash or sanitize their hands.

 

3. Social Distancing

Before your child returns to school among their friends, make sure you teach them the importance of maintaining distance while talking to someone, while eating lunch, while walking to the library/playground etc.

4. Take Precautions

Do not send your kid to school if your child is having: 

  • Low/high fever 
  • Nasal congestion 
  • Cough or cold 
  • Shortness of breath 
  • Bad throat 
  • Headache 

 

5. Vaccinations

Make sure your child is up to date with all recommended vaccines to avoid any risk of infection.

Whether your child is heading back to school for in-person learning, a mix of in-person and online learning, or virtual learning, it’s vital to make them understand how to stay safe. These tips mentioned above are great starting points to keep your little one safe when they go back to school.
