Primary Skills: Fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination
Materials:
- Coloured papers/chart paper/newspaper
- Yarn
- Scissors
- Glue
- Pencil
- Paints
- Marker
- Googly eyes (optional)
Instructions:
- Let’s begin by drawing and cutting out the nest, the birds and their beaks. This template gives you the design and dimensions of the objects – all you have to do is trace them out onto your paper of choice!
- Draw and cut out one nest, two pairs of circles (4 in total) for the birds, and two diamond shapes (for the beaks). If you like, you can directly cut out the pieces from the printed template and use them in this craft project.
- Next, let’s start painting. If you’ve used chart paper or newspaper for the cutting, then let your child paint the nest in brown colour, two circles in one colour (for one bird), the other two circles in a different colour (for the second bird), and the diamond shapes in orange colour (for the beaks). Let these dry thoroughly.
- While the paints are drying, let’s make the feathers for the birds. Don’t worry if you don’t have ready-made feathers! A set of 4 feathers is super easy and quick to make from coloured paper, newspaper, or magazine pages. Check out this 4-minute tutorial below!
- After the feathers are ready, take a long thread of yarn. Cut it up into small, short pieces.
- Next, take the painted nest. Paste the yarn pieces around the nest with glue (see image for reference). This gives the nest a “twig-and-sticks” feel! Let this dry completely.
- While this is drying, let’s paste the other elements together. Take the two circles of the same colour, and help your child paste one slightly on top of the other (see image). Repeat this with the other two circles. These are your birds.
- Then, take one diamond, and fold it in half horizontally, so that two V-shapes are formed. Paste the bottom V-shape, correct side up, in the middle of the top circle of one bird (see image). This is your beak! Your child can repeat this with the other bird and beak.
- Next, with a marker, let your child draw a pair of eyes on each bird, above the beak. If you have googly eyes, you can use those, too!
- Once the yarn pieces are dry, let your child paste the two birds on the nest, wherever he likes.
- Lastly, paste two feathers on each bird, one on the left side and on the right side.
Now you’ve got two little birds resting in their nest! Wasn’t that a lot of fun?
