Primary Skills – Folding, hand-eye coordination, creativity

Materials:

  • Coloured papers/thin cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Pencil
  • Paints/markers

Instructions:

  • On a piece of green coloured paper, draw the stems of the cactus plant as shown below. Then, carefully them out. If using cardboard (from cereal boxes, etc.), let your child paint the brown side in green colour after cutting out the stems. Let it dry.
  • Next, help your child fold each stem in half vertically (top to bottom). If using cardboard, make sure that the green side is on the inside fold (see image for reference). Once folded, apply glue on one half of the outer fold of a stem.
  • Paste another stem to the glued side. Then, carefully stick the last stem to the two halves of the other stems with glue. The finished product should look like this.
  • Then, help your child make the pot for the cactus plant. From brown coloured paper, cut out a medium-sized circle (about 3 – 4 cm in diameter). Then, from the same coloured paper, cut out a strip that is half an inch wide, and about 18 – 19 cm long, as it should cover the circumference of the circle you have drawn. If you want to be sure, measure the strip around the circle and make adjustments to its length accordingly before pasting!
  • Next, paste the circle and the strip of paper as shown below.
  • Lastly, help your child apply glue to the bottom of the cactus plant, and stick it carefully in the brown paper pot.
  • Additionally, if you like, you can even create some small paper flowers and stick them onto the green stems.

The cactus plant is ready to be used as décor!
