New Family Holiday Traditions To Start This Year!

When we think of the festive season, we reminisce about the past, go down memory lane and remember all the fun things we did as kids! For example, my family would bake Christmas ornaments on Christmas eve, and then gather around the dining table and paint them in our favourite colours. For the New Year, we would make it a point to visit an orphanage and donate toys each year.

Every family, in this sense, has something they love doing during this festive season. Now, as we become parents and have our own families, we get to decide which of those traditions to carry forward into our holiday celebrations! We also have the chance to bring in new traditions of our own.

1. Start a happiness jar

Over a meal, everyone shares the happiest moment of their day. For bonus points, you can write them all down, put them in a jar, then pull them out and read them back at the end of the month or year!

2. Start a new holiday tradition by doing a charity drive

This could be as simple as collecting food or clothes for a local food bank or shelter, or organising a toy drive for children in need. It’s sure to bring you all closer and help your kids understand how kindness should be a big part of their lives.

3. Have a family holiday movie marathon

Pick a few of your favourite holiday movies and spend an evening snuggled up on the couch together, watching them and having a great time!

4. Create a holiday-themed scavenger hunt

Hide holiday-themed items around the house or neighbourhood and give your family a list of items to find. These types of hunts are so much fun to do as a group!

5. Start a new holiday tradition by decorating gingerbread houses together

This can be a fun and creative activity for the whole family! If you can’t bake one, you can just create a house out of cardboard, paint it and decorate it together.

6. Have a holiday bake-off

Pick a few holiday recipes and spend an afternoon baking and decorating cookies, cakes, or other treats together.

7. Have a holiday lights tour

Load up the car and drive around to see the best holiday light displays in your area. Bonus points for spotting reindeer or even mistletoe!

8. Host a holiday game night

Play board games, card games, or other holiday-themed games together as a family!

9. Camp out in front of your Christmas tree

Alright, if this doesn’t get you in the mood for happy holidays, nothing will! This is such a fun way to bond together swapping stories and having a picnic in the living room!

10. Have a holiday craft day

Spend the day making holiday decorations, ornaments, and other crafts together as a family!
