In 1996, along with six other crew members, she was chosen to serve as a Mission Specialist and Robotic Arm operator on her first mission. The duration of Kalpana’s maiden space voyage in the Columbia space shuttle was 15 days, 16 hours, and 34 minutes. She covered 10.45 million kilometres over this time, travelling 252 times around the globe. An astronaut from Ukraine and one from Japan were on board. For a total cost of about 56 million dollars, the crew conducted tests for producing more vital metals and faster computer chips and experiments like pollinating plants to examine food growth in space.

Kalpana Chawla’s Death

It was believed that a piece of insulation that detached from the main external tank during the launch struck the space shuttle’s wing. As a result of this damage, a hole developed on the wing, resulting in the loss of sensors and ultimately Columbia itself. The Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated on February 1, 2003, as it re-entered the atmosphere.
