A bright and fun summer craft project to do with your little one!

Age Range – 3 – 4 years

Primary Skills – Fine motor skills, paper folding

Materials:

  • Plain paper/newspaper
  • Coloured paper (optional)
  • Paints
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Pencil and ruler
  • Straw/wooden stick/old pen or pencil
  • Googly eyes (optional)
  • Feathers (optional)

Instructions:

  • Let’s begin by making the handprints. Lay out some yellow paint (or any colour your child wants) in a container. Let your child paint his hands himself (but supervise him, in case he accidentally puts a painted finger in his mouth!).
  • As your child paints his dominant hand with his non-dominant hand, his motor and cognitive skills will get sharpened.
  • As he finishes painting one hand, help him stamp it quickly and firmly on some plain paper or newspaper.
  • Once both stamps are done and dry, draw an outline around them and cut them out carefully. These are the puppets. Set them aside.
  • Let’s get started on the legs, feet, and beak. Take some coloured paper, plain paper or newspaper, and draw and cut out two rectangles for the legs, two feet, and one triangular beak (see image for reference).
  • Let your child paint these cut-outs in orange colour (or any other shade he likes). Let dry.
  • Then, fold the two rectangles in accordion style. This means, fold over a little of the rectangle at one end, and keep folding it forward while alternating between the front side and the backside. If you’re confused, take a look at this video below to learn how to do an accordion fold (and how to make a simple paper fan!).

  • The puppet legs should now look like this.
  • Paste the feet on one end of each leg. Then, paste the legs at the bottom of the puppets, at the backside.
  • Next, draw some funny eyes on the puppets. If you have googly eyes, those work well, too! Also, paste the beak below the eyes.
  • If you want to add some feathers for fluffiness, stick a feather on either side of the puppet (see image).
  • If you don’t have any feathers, check out the tutorial below to find out how to make simple paper feathers in 4 minutes!

  • Lastly, stick a straw, wooden stick, or an old pen or pencil behind the puppet such that your child can hold it in his hand.

The chick puppets are ready for play time! How much fun was that?
