Materials:

  • Plain paper
  • Cardboard
  • Rubber bands (about 12 – 15)
  • Sponge
  • Paints
  • Water
  • Containers

Instructions:

  • Cover your child’s art surface with newspaper to avoid a potential mess.
  • Get a piece of cardboard, and make it half the size of the paper being used for the painting, as it will serve as firm support for the rubber bands.
  • Get the rubber bands ready. Help your child fold the drawing paper over the cardboard, such that the cardboard is in between the two sides of the paper.
  • Then, show him how to wrap the rubber bands around the paper.
  • Next, take out some paints in wide, shallow containers. Add some water to the paints to make them more fluid and lighter in colour.
  • Then, show your child how to dip the sponge in a container of paint and squeeze just a little excess water out.
  • Let him press the paint-filled sponge (not rub it!) on the rubber band-covered paper. If you like, you can use different colours across the canvas!
  • Let this side dry. Then, turn it over and repeat the process.
  • When both sides are completely dry, carefully remove the rubber bands and unfold the paper. A beautiful pattern of stripes will be seen!

Your child’s masterpiece is ready!
