Feeding Bottle Buying Guide

What to Look for when Buying a Feeding Bottle

At the time of buying a feeding bottle for your baby, multiple factors must be considered before selecting a feeding bottle.

Baby's age

As babies have very specific preferences for the bottle shape, flow of milk, nipple, etc., it is advisable to try out different shapes as your baby grows and select the most preferred bottle. Small-size (up to 150 ml) bottles are suited for 0-3 months old babies, whereas large-size bottles (up to 330ml) can be used for older babies.

Baby's development

Most baby bottle brands have standard shapes and sizes of bottles in the market, with age-specific use. Special feeding bottles for premature babies are available in the market. These bottles are designed to help babies with a poor sucking reflex. Some of them are even designed to help these babies switch from a feeding tube to the bottle. These bottles have a nipple hole specifically designed for a slow flow rate suitable for premature babies. Bottles with special-shaped nipples and controlled flows should be bought for babies with cleft lips. Orthodontic nipples are available for babies who are starting to develop teeth.

Nipple material

Latex and silicone are the two nipple materials widely available in the market. If your baby is sensitive or allergic to latex, then it is better to use silicone nipples that are stronger and last longer.

Nipple size, shape, and flow

Standard-sized nipples, wide-based nipples, and nipples that mimic mothers teat are available in the market. In order to figure out which nipple works for your baby, you may have to try all types in the beginning. Younger babies prefer slow flow of liquids, so they dont ingest much air. Therefore, nipples with small holes should be considered. Older babies prefer faster flow, so nipples with larger holes should be preferred.

Bottle material

The most popular feeding bottle material is plastic, as it is economical and comes in various colors, shapes, and sizes. But with the rising concern for plastic leaching into the babys feed, glass bottles are making a comeback. If you opt for a feeding bottle made of plastic, make sure it does not contain BPA. Stainless steel feeding bottles are also available in the market.

Bottle size and capacity

As babies grow up, their feeding requirements will change. Parents can start with a standard 120ml bottle for newborns and eventually use 240 ml to 300 ml bottles for older babies.

Bottle shape

A standard bottle is cylindrical in shape and can be held easily by newborn babies. For babies older than 6 months, you can also buy bottles that are angular or have a wide base, so they have a better feeding experience.

Bottle-nipple compatibility

Wide base bottles support nipples designed to mimic a mothers breast. Similarly, bottles with vents that avoid vacuum build-up are compatible only with silicone nipples. Therefore, before making the purchase of particular nipples, always consider their compatibility with the bottle that you have.

Cost of buying

Cost of buying

Silicone nipples and plastic bottles are resilient to weather changes and last for a long time. Therefore, it is better to stock up and avoid no-nipple and brokenbottle emergencies. Feeding bottles range between 100-500 INR, and nipples can be bought in packs of 2 or 3 - each unit costing between 25-200 INR. Other accessories like bottle warmers, tote bags, bottle drying racks, and bottle cleaning brushes must also be considered in the cost of buying, as they range between 1000-2500 INR and add considerably to the overall cost.

Cost of maintenance

Both the bottle and nipples have to be sterilized before each use. It is also advisable not to use harsh detergents to clean them. Thus, cost of maintenance must always be considered when you buy a bottle. Wide-base bottles are easier to clean and sterilize, but angular bottles or bottles with vents may be a little difficult to wash.
