Ways To Teach Pronouns To Kids

Learning pronouns in English is not difficult for children. The use of pronouns is simple and can be taught to kids with the help of the activities mentioned below.

1. Spot The Pronouns

Give your child a small story or one page of a book to read. Ask them to list down or circle all the pronouns they can spot.

2. Point At “He” & “She”

Make your child point to the correct image when you say “he” or “she.” Discuss and make your child learn how generally, boys go by “he” and girls go by “she.” Next, show your little one a picture of a boy doing something or a girl doing something. Then ask them to point to the correct picture when you say “she is…” or “he is…”.

3. Create Your Own Story

Encourage your child to make a story using pronouns. Give your child the name of some elements like a cycle, a smartphone, etc., to use in their story. They can start their story like this:

“One day, a boy went to a park by cycle. He saw many butterflies in the park. He liked them very much, so he took a picture of butterflies with his smartphone….”

4. That’s Mine Game

Ask your little one to use personal pronouns to describe who owns certain items in this game. They can use objective pronouns, like me, you, him, her, it, us, you and them, to replace the name of the owner of different objects, pointing towards the owner as they use the pronoun.

– You: This is my pencil.
– Your child can say:

This is my pen.
That is her pencil.
This is our book.

5. Pronoun Craft

Cut out some circles big enough to put names on them. Write the names of various female characters your child likes on the circles. Similarly, write male names and the name of a few things on other circles. Now carve three squares from the chart paper and write He, She, It on these squares. Ask your child to put circles on the relevant squares.
