What Are Even Numbers?  

A simple definition of even numbers is as follows: 

If a whole number is divided by 2 and it leaves no remainder, then the number is called an even number. Whole numbers are classified into even and odd numbers.  
You can also define even numbers as a number that can be divided into two equal groups or pairs without leaving any remainder.  

When you observe, you will notice that all the alternate numbers are even. In other words, to list down consecutive even numbers, you need to skip alternate numbers from the natural numbers.

For example,  

1. If we divide 4 by 2 . i.e., 4 ÷ 2 = 2
Here we see that 4 is completely divisible by 2, and the remainder is 0. So, 4 is an even number.  

2. If we divide 66 by 2 . i.e., 66 ÷ 2 = 33
Here we see that 66 is completely divisible by 2, and the remainder is 0. So, 66 is an even number.  

3. If we divide 87 by 2 . i.e., 87 ÷ 2 = 46 (2) + 1
Here we see that 87 divided by 2 leaves behind a remainder of 1. So, 87 is an odd number.   

In more mathematical form, we can say that an even number can be defined as an integer that takes the form of n=2k, where k is an integer (which implies that it can be both positive and negative).   

Why It Is Important For Children To Learn About Even Numbers?  

Like everything else that we learn in school, learning about even numbers helps us prep for the more complex theories that we are taught later in school. Building a strong foundation for anything is key to ensuring that whatever goes on top of it is strong too. Creating a strong foundation with simple theories, such as even and odd numbers, help create a strong foundation for your child. Later on, when they learn more complex properties such as multiplication and division, this foundation plays a vital role. Understanding the basics helps make us understand the more complex things in a better way. Hence, it is important for children to learn about even numbers.   

How To Identify Whether The Number Is Even Or Odd?  

It is quite simple to identify whether a given number is even or odd. The easiest way of doing this is by checking the unit place of the given number. If the unit place digit is 0,2,4,6, or 8, the given number is an even number. 

If you wish to further check your findings, you can divide the number by 2. If the remainder is 0, the given number is an even number.   

For Example: 

1. 5678
Here, we can see that the unit’s place digit is 8. This means that the given number is an even number. But to check this, we will divide the number by 2. 
5678 ÷ 2 = 2839 

The given number is completely divisible by 2 and leaves behind no remainder. Hence, the given number is an even number.  

2. 987642
Here, we can see that the unit’s place digit is 2. This means that the given number is an even number. But to check this, we will divide the number by 2.  
987642 ÷ 2 = 493821 

The given number is completely divisible by 2 and leaves behind no remainder. Hence, the given number is an even number.  

3. 2345
Here, we can see that the unit’s place digit is 5. This means that the given number is an odd number. But to check this, we will divide the number by 2.  
2345 ÷ 2 = (1172 x 2) + 1  
The given number is not completely divisible by 2 and leaves behind a remainder of 1. Hence, the given number is an odd number.

There are three important properties of even numbers:

Property 1 – Addition  

Addition is the operation of adding two numbers together. This operation can happen between any two numbers regardless of their properties.

  • When adding even and odd numbers, the resulting number is always odd.  
    For Example:  
     7 + 6 = 13
    13 + 14 = 27  
  • When adding even and even numbers, the resulting number is always even.

    12 + 16 = 28 
    46 + 44 = 90  
  • When adding odd and odd numbers, the resulting number is always even. 
    For Example: 
    15 + 5 = 20

Property 2 – Subtraction  

Subtraction is the operation of subtracting two numbers together. This operation can happen between any two numbers regardless of their properties.  

Properties of Subtraction:  

  • When subtracting even and odd numbers, the resulting number is always odd.  
    For Example:  
    7 – 6 = 1  
    23 – 14 = 9  
  • When subtracting even and even numbers, the resulting number is always even.  
    For Example: 
    16 – 8 = 8 
    46 – 44 = 2  
  • When subtracting odd and odd numbers, the resulting number is always odd. 
    For Example:
    15 – 5 = 10 
    61 – 21 = 40    

Property 3 – Multiplication  

Multiplication is the operation of multiplying two numbers together. This operation can happen between any two numbers regardless of their properties.  

Properties of Multiplication: 

  • When subtracting even and odd numbers, the resulting number is always odd.  
    For Example:  
    7 x 6 = 42  
    23 x 14 = 322  
  • When multiplying even and even numbers, the resulting number is always even.  
    For Example: 
    16 x 8 = 128 
    46 x 44 = 2024  
  • When multiplying odd and odd numbers, the resulting number is always odd. 
    For Example: 
    15 x 5 = 75 
    61 x 21 = 1281

What Is The Difference Between Odd And Even Numbers?  

There are a lot of differences between odd and even numbers. Some are:

  • Even numbers are of the form n = 2k, whereas odd numbers are of the form n = 2k + 1.   
  • Even numbers are completely divisible by 2, whereas off numbers leave behind a remainder of 1.   
  • The unit place digit of even numbers is 0,2,4,6, and 8. The unit place digit of odd numbers is 1,3,5,7, and 9.

We can see that the unit place digit of the given number is 7, which is not divisible by 2. Hence, the given number is an odd number.
