The Story About The Gingerbread Man For Children

This Gingerbread Man tale is a playful short story about a cookie who cannot stop running. Read it aloud and let your child join in with the famous chant.

Once upon a time, a kind old woman lived in a little cottage. One morning, she baked a gingerbread man with raisin eyes, a candy smile and three icing buttons.

When she opened the oven door, the cookie jumped out and cried, “Run, run, as fast as you can! You can’t catch me, I’m the Gingerbread Man!”

“Come back!” called the old woman, chasing him down the lane. But the gingerbread man was too fast.

Soon, he passed a chicken in the yard. “Stop, little cookie! You look delicious,” clucked the chicken.

“I have run from an old woman, and I can run from you, I can!” he laughed. “Run, run, as fast as you can! You can’t catch me, I’m the Gingerbread Man!”

Next, he raced past a horse in the field. “Wait! I would like to eat you,” neighed the horse.

“I have run from an old woman and a chicken, and I can run from you, I can!” he teased, and sped away.

Then a cat sitting on a wall called out, “Stop, gingerbread man! I am so hungry.”

“I have run from an old woman, a chicken and a horse, and I can run from you, I can!” he sang proudly.

At last, he came to a wide river. “How will I cross?” he worried. “The water will turn me to mush!”

A sly fox crept up beside him. “Do not be afraid, little cookie,” said the fox. “Hop on my tail, and I will carry you across.”

“But you might eat me,” said the gingerbread man.

“Never!” smiled the fox. “I only want to help.”

The gingerbread man climbed onto the fox’s tail, but the water grew deeper. “Climb on my back, or you will get wet,” said the fox. Soon, he said, “Climb on my nose, little one, so you stay dry.”

The gingerbread man hopped onto the fox’s nose. “Oh, dear! I am a quarter gone,” he cried. Then, snap! The fox gobbled him up, and that was the end of the gingerbread man.
