Many historical sites have been discovered with feeding vessels that indicate that women might have
expressed milk to feed infants.
Milk was originally expressed by hand. However, the process has seen a decline since the invention of breast
pumps, which made expressing milk easier and faster.
The first pumps were patented in the mid-19th century, as a device to treat inverted nipples and also to
provide milk to the infants who were either too weak to suckle or couldn’t latch onto the breasts.
In the year 1854, the United States Patent Office gave the first patent to O.H. Needham for a breast pump.
Later in 1863, the Scientific American credited L.O. Colvin as the inventor and patent applicant of a breast
pump.
The first mechanical breast pump was then invented by engineer Edward Lasker. It was made in the early
1920s and imitated an infant's sucking action.3
The first vacuum-operated electrical breast pump was manufactured in 1991 in the U.S. It worked effectively
without causing any discomfort to the user.4
Breast pumps have been commercially available only for the past 20 years even though the first breast pump
was invented more than 150 years ago.
