Learn About Seasons Of The Year For Kids

The world around us is constantly changing. For centuries, we have evolved, and our surroundings have evolved around us. With each passing decade, our lives become more entangled with technology and science. We stray further and further away from nature. However, no matter how advanced our lives become, we can never completely erase nature and its roles in our lives. Nature is the ultimate decider, and our lives are directly and indirectly controlled by it. One such example is the different seasons of the year. The Earth’s revolution causes a change in seasons. Seasons are a very integral part of our lives as it greatly affects our lifestyle and habits. People’s habits change from season to season. In this article, we will learn about seasons in English, how they affect us, poems and songs and more!

What Are The Seasons?

A season is a period of the year that is distinguished by special weather and climate conditions. Seasons vary in different hemispheres of the world. Children from a young age start to notice the different characteristics of each season.

You may notice that some months are really warm while some months are really cold. You sit under fans for some while you shield yourself with umbrellas for others. Depending on who you ask, they will give you a different definition for seasons. Some may define it on the basis of environmental changes, some may define it on the basis of produce (fruits and vegetables) changes, and some may even define it on the basis of academic years, for instance, “My school starts in the fall, and we get our summer vacations in May.” However, a standard definition of seasons for kids is:

As the year goes on, there are changes in the weather and climate of a place. This change is divided into four parts, and they are called seasons. There are mainly 4 seasons of the year –

  1. Spring
  2. Summer
  3. Fall/Autumn
  4. Winter

When Do Children Learn About The Seasons?

Children are very curious by nature. They first start by observing things and then asking questions about them. This is generally the same case for seasons too. Your child will first start learning about seasons by merely noticing the change in the environment and in habits. When we say habits, we mean seasonal habits. Your child may notice that during a few months in the year, everyone wears warm woollen clothes, while in other months, everyone enjoys sitting in an AC with some ice cream. Your child may start by asking you about these differences. Remember to always encourage your little one to ask questions about their surroundings. Teach them about the seasons whenever they ask. Pictures and videos, as well as real-life examples, would be your best teaching aids. Your child will be curious, and they will want to know more. However, always remember to make any form of learning fun and exciting for your little one. This encourages them to learn more efficiently!

Why Is It Important To Teach Your Child About Seasons?

It is very important to teach your little one about seasons as it is one of the most fundamental concepts about the environment and their surroundings they should know. You can refer to a chart of seasons for preschool to teach your child about the four seasons with images.

Poems On Four Seasons Of The Year For Kids

1. Poem For Spring

Spring’s Promise

By: Mary C. Plummer

You promised you would come back again,
With your balmy air and beauty;
You promised to bring the dear little birds,
O, Spring, how well you attend your duty.

‘Tis now I feel your near approach,
As I walk along life’s pathway,
The chirping birds and fragrant flowers,
The swaying trees, and budding bowers.

The rippling brook and peeping grasses.
Romping boys, and laughing lasses,
Cupid, with her magic power.
Playing upon the hearts of men.

Sunbeams dancing in the places
Where the winter’s frost has been;
Tells me, happy, joyous Springtime,
That you’re gently coming in.

2. Poem For Summer

Summer-time

By: Anne S. Watkins

Oh, I want to go up in the hills
And lay me down on the earth,
‘Neath a tree where the mocking bird trills
And the bees are humming their mirth.

Oh, I want to hear grasshoppers scraping
Their complaints upon their hind legs
And see all the winged things mating.
Nesting and laying their eggs.

To hear the whippoorwill cry
From out the wood by the river,
And think how I would hate to die.
And sit up all in a shiver.

Oh, I want to get drunk on the smell
That the sun extracts from the ground,
I want to sleep long and well
On this splendid secret I’ve found.

And then to be waked with a kiss.
Let fall from eventide
Full of the dew drops’ bliss.
And all other sweets beside.

Yes, I want to talk with the Maker
Of all this lovely creation.
To thank Him that I am partaker.
Exalted whatever my station.

3. Poem On Autumn

Autumn Fires

By: Robert Louis Stevenson

In the other gardens
And all up in the vale,
From the autumn bonfires
See the smoke trail!

Pleasant summer over,
And all the summer flowers,
The red fire blazes,
The grey smoke towers.

Sing a song of seasons!
Something bright in all!
Flowers in the summer,
Fires in the fall!

4. Poem On Winter

Winter Is Back Again

By: Catherine Pulsifer

Winter brings the cold of February
But remember it is only temporary.

Spring is the season that comes next
Focus on that, it puts it all in context.

And then the heat of summer does arrive
And we start wishing for the cold to survive

And then we see the season of fall
There is beauty in the trees for all

And then we are back to winter again

The seasons are so certain!
